Portrait of Howard Robert “Mike” Greenawalt

A lifelong fixture of the Mechanicsburg community, Howard Robert “Mike” Greenawalt—son of Robert and Joyce Greenawalt—was raised on East Main Street and grew up attending the Mechanicsburg Presbyterian Church.

Mike’s educational journey began in 1955 at Arch Street Elementary, continuing through Simpson Street Junior High and the Elmwood Avenue school. He eventually moved to the newly constructed high school on Broad Street, where he graduated in 1970. During his senior year, Mike distinguished himself both in the classroom and on the green. He dominated the local golf circuit, winning back-to-back individual league championships in his junior and senior years.

After attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Mike transferred to Elizabethtown College, where he earned a B.S. in Accounting in 1974. His professional ascent began as an intern at Greenawalt & Company, P.C. Upon graduation, he joined the firm full-time, earned his CPA license, and eventually became an owner and officer from 1980 through 2011. Under his leadership, the firm maintained a significant presence with locations in Mechanicsburg, Middletown, and Carlisle. Mike’s career was defined by a commitment to continuous mastery and professional ethics. He specialized in audit and tax engagements for community banks and financial institutions, completing both levels of the AICPA National Banking School at the University of Virginia. In addition to being a CPA, he earned the prestigious Certified Business Manager (CBM), Certified Financial Services Auditor (CFSA), and Chartered Bank Auditor (CBA) designations. His leadership extended to the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants (PICPA), where he served as President of the South Central Chapter and Chairman of the Committee on Professional Ethics.

Beyond his firm, Mike leveraged his financial expertise to benefit the Central Pennsylvania community. He served as a member of the Mechanicsburg Area Foundation Advisory Board of TFEC and was a founding Gifts Director of the Wildcat Foundation. His civic contributions also included serving as President of the Carlisle Rotary Club and Treasurer of Carlisle Area Meals on Wheels. Even in retirement, his expertise remained in high demand; he served as a director for Riverview Financial Corporation and subsequently for Mid Penn Bancorp, where he acted as the designated financial expert on the Audit Committee.

Despite these high-level accolades, Mike is most revered for his integrity and his “familyfirst” mindset. An administrative assistant once noted, “I love working here, because no matter how busy they become, Mike always prioritizes family and understands others’ need to do the same.” Mike lived this philosophy daily, never missing his children’s swim meets, officiating and timing for their meets and frequently coaching their baseball and softball teams.

Today, Mike lives in Boiling Springs with his wife, Laurie Stansfield Greenawalt (Class of 1973). They are the proud parents of two children and grandparents to three.

In recognition of his exemplary career and steadfast service to the community, the Mechanicsburg High School Alumni Association is honored to induct Mike Greenawalt into the Hall of Fame at our 2026 annual dinner. We invite you to join us in celebrating a lifetime of outstanding achievement.
